Landmark Mail

CB alias Boris passed away today morning at 4:30 am. He was killed by four vicious stray dogs. He was buried near my home around 7:00 am. The loss to our family by his untimely demise is immense. We all feel like we have lost a part of the family. We all love you CB.

Vinay calls me .... "we are waiting in front of HP petrol bunk, come fast". Status: got up, washed my face ... and trip was officially started when I met them at petrol bunk. Trip crew was confirmed: Sudhi, Bhanu, Suman, Vinay and myself. But I was not aware of trip itinerary. Even before the trip was started we drew comparisons of this with the last bandipur-mysore-ooty trip with sujit. Sudhi, Bhanu & myself decided that we shall dedicate a surprise trip in future for sujit.

1:10 am, 8th April 2007
Pulled over at maddur coffee day to relax/chill out with coffee ;-). Vinay wanted to have a strong coffeeee... hence we decided to give him a kick ... I meant "caffeine kick". We had a nice chat, boys gave some tips to vinay for his 3 months picnic with uncle sam. I also vented out some frustration about travel in HP.

3:30 am, 8th April 2007
Location: somewhere in the middle of nagarhole park highway. We sight a lone bull elephant munching, it was quite huge. We stop the car and try to help ourselves for a better view. At this junction the elephant got enraged and started making sounds ... it took a defensive stance (warning that it would charge at us). That was enough to scare us, it even made sudhi:our cool driver seem like a rookie struggling to come to terms with clutch/gears. We left that place as soon as possible and headed towards nagarhole national park entrance.

6:00 am, 8th April 2007
By this time we had messed up our brains so much that we went around the national park to get into it ... this cost us almost 3 hrs or more than 100 kms. But the weather was so pleasant that we didn't want to waste time to help ourselves with some picturesque snaps.

7:45 am, 8th April 2007
Yippee, we finally reached nagarhole park. We had high hopes on this, because safari in a natural game reserve has always been a disappointment for us.... (like ranthambore, dandeli, bandipur, etc). This turned out to be master of all disappointments ... so much so .. that our boys including me were sleeping during safari ... can you imagine that ???

After a hugely disappointing trip to nagarhole, we started towards irruppu falls. It was another 1 & 1/2 hours driving for poor sudhi, he was completely stressed out. He just got what doctor advised him, a natural waterfall to take bath and a temple to pray. We had a gala time with prakruthi ... sorry sudhi :-). Irruppu falls was a enjoyable experience, lovely waterfalls with cool water to beat summer heat. We bought some juice/biscuits as our break-fast quite literally. Saw some very good looking babes while were on our way back to the car. Why are we always at the wrong end of time ???

We started towards madikeri, we had planned to do tadiyandamol trek/camp for the rest of the day. Sudhi was driving, so was bhanu sleeping and vinay dreaming. It was a long journey ... we all had a nap, except vinay/sudhi.

3:00 pm, 8th April 2007
Finally madikeri welcomed us, but not by any colonel daughter like in "mungaaru male" ;-) ... we were hoping against hope that some "besigeya baale" would come our way... but that also didn't happen. Searched for a good hotel to have nice lunch ... but we were in the wrong end of time, no good hotel had meals ... but finally settled for a decent hotel where we finished ourmeals. We bought some groceries for our night camp in tadiyandamol ... we had planned to help ourselves with rice and sambar. After all this shopping/eating we left for tadiyandamol, people were confusing us left and right with directions. Finally with some help from friendly locals and hari we got right directions for tadiyandmol.

5:30 pm, 8th April 2007
We were closing in on tadiyandamol, at kakabay we decided that we shall not hire any jeep to reach and trek around 5 kms at 6:00 pm .... mind you we had to setup tent after trekking 5 kms ... with no or very little light source.

6:00 pm, 8th April 2007
Trekking was officially started, myself and sudhi parked the car near a house and trekked back to re-group with boys. yes, the trek was difficult as expected ... it was steep all the way. we reached the base of tadiyandamol around 6:45 pm, it was dark already. We now faced a humungous challenge of setting up tent and preparing dinner ... with just one torch.

8:00 pm, 8th April 2007
Thanks to our team effort, we had finally setup tent by this time. At least we could safely brave the night and cold if not escape from starving. This was time we learnt some lessons we tried to prepare rice and it flopped big time ... it proved us that .... we still didn't know how to cook. In the quest of preparing rice ... our guys lost all the potable water we had. I saw no reason to prepare sambhar when there was no water and rice, when the time was ripe for sleep. We had some bread/jam, bread/mango pickles and bread/jam/pickle. Vinay was so worked up that, he came up with this beautiful song ....

We were not alone, we had some tourist people to accompany us near base camp, they were better prepared with camp fire/etc items. Sudhi/suman sought some help from them, but were politely refused and sent back.

9:30 pm, 8th April 2007
Finished sumptuous dinner. We decided that we will not trek up the hill at 4:00 am as decided instead to trek around 6 am. I was better prepared to weather the cold, I was armed with a jacket and 2 bed sheets ... boys weren't so lucky ... they had to take a bit of cold pain :-(.

6:00 am, 9th April 2007
My alarm started to remind me that I have to go to gym. Was lucky enough not to get a call from vivek asking me to come to gym. we all started to trek up the hill with a foot ball. It was easy in the beginning ... but started to take toll on us ... we missed a trick or two by not carrying a bottle of water.

8:00 am, 9th April 2007
I became King of the Mountain, Yes. There was a seat at the top of the tadiyandmol, where I sat to proclaim my supremacy ;-) over mortal beings like an immortal. We took lot of snaps and started to enjoy ourselves, we played a bit of football. Sudhi became the worlds first highest altitude goal keeper and I am the current goal keeper at highest altitude. So was bhanu the highest altitude striker.

10:00 am, 9th April 2007
Heat started to get us, we were exhausted with no water and food. We started to trek back to camp, met some people trying to climb up ... took some water from them and wished good luck. After reaching base camp, we didn't waste time ... packed off from that place as soon as possible. Saw some very fit/sexy foreign aunties trekking tadiyandmole while were on our way back tothe car. Why are we always at the wrong end of time ???

Have to thank that house guy who gave us litres of water for drinking without asking any questions. We helped ourselves with a watermelon bought by smart-thinking folks in our camp. That was our breakfast, we had decided that this was enough. We left for bangalore.

We had decided that we shall have a good lunch, hence we had to wait till mysore for it. We finally had a decent(taking circumstances into account) lunch, at least some good crowd around us. I and vinay entered into an argument and proved him wrong with help of aunty liked by bhanu.

There was confusion and criticism (that I didn't tell them where exactly to stop) boys dropped me near very close to my house. We all exchanged wishes and I said bye. It was fun :-)!

Loooong Time

All Work and No TreK ... makes Chetan a Dull Boy :-). This is the first time I am writing a prelude to a trek/trip. We(sudhi,myself and friends) are planning to visit coorg over a span of 3 days... I really dont know where/what we are heading into ? But would like to enjoy .... wait for the sequel ... "Coorg".

How to Do a Basic Wheelie on a Motorcycle ?

Steps:

1. Roll at about 10-20 mph in first gear.
2. Pull in the clutch and rev the motor a little, then pop the clutch. Do this a few times with a little more gas each time until you start to feel comfortable with how high the front end is coming up.
3. Once you are comfortable getting the front up a little, it's time to worry about throttle and brake control. Use the throttle to maintain the height of the wheelie and the back brake to keep from looping the bike. Chopping the throttle while in first will almost always bring you back over, but you will most likely slam the front pretty hard.
4. If you get good enough at the brake control, you can ride a wheelie in first until the motor blows, in theory. But at first you will probably just run through your rpm range and drop the front down. This is when you need to shift to second. It's a clutchless shift, at the peak of the wheelie when you have about 3k rpms left before redline. Let the front come down just a bit and simultaneously shift to second.

Tips:

• Body position is very important. Beginners may be uncomfortable and hug the tank with their knees to help hold on, but ideally sliding back against the rear seat is the best place.
• On powerful streetbikes, as soon as you shift to second the front end will pull up a little so keep the rear brake covered.
• If you have never done a clutchless shift, practice on two wheels first. Get your rpm's up fairly high, back off the throttle just a bit and shift firmly so you don't hit nuetral.
• Standup wheelies, either both feet on the back pegs or just the left foot on the back peg can make it much easier to balance a wheelie.

Warnings:

• Wheelies are dangerous, even when done by professionals.
• Wear protective gear and practice on a small dirtbike such as a 50-100cc. These smaller bikes can help tremendously with learning brake control which will prevent you from looping a motorcycle.
• Do not think you can learn to ride wheelies in a day. Even practicing every day will take you a few weeks to get comfortable. Most of the pro's you see in videos or doing shows have been doing it for many years.

Things you need:

• Helmet
• Gloves (gripping your handlebars is very crucial)
• Protective gear, or at least a leather jacket and blue jeans.
• Shoes with some grip; try skateboard shoes like Etnies or DC.
• and Ofcourse .... your Bike :-)
